Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3, and it suits most skin. In cosmetics it is used for the look of enlarged pores, for a more even-looking tone, and for skin that feels balanced rather than shiny or tight. It is water-based, gentle in feel and easy to pair with almost everything else on your shelf, which is why it now appears in serums, moisturisers, toners and even shampoos. If you are choosing your first active ingredient, it is a calm place to start.

What Is Niacinamide?

Vitamin B3 comes in more than one form, and niacinamide (you may also see it as nicotinamide) is the one skincare uses. On an ingredients list it appears simply as "niacinamide", and the higher it sits, the more of it the formula contains. It dissolves in water, so it is usually found in light, fluid textures: serums, essences, toners and gel-creams.

Cosmetic science describes it carefully and generally. It is valued for helping skin feel comfortable and well hydrated, for supporting the skin's own moisture barrier, and, with regular use, for the look of a smoother, more even surface. None of this is instant, and none of it is a treatment. Think of it as steady, everyday care.

Niacinamide Serums

A serum is the most direct way to bring niacinamide into a routine, because it sits close to the skin before your moisturiser. Sesderma's Sesmahal B3 Niacinamide 6% Concentrated Serum pairs 6% niacinamide with hyaluronic acid in a lightweight texture and a precise dropper. laCabine's Monoactives 15% Niacinamide Serum Cream is a cream-serum built around 15% niacinamide for the look of uneven tone. L'Oréal Paris's Bright Reveal 10% Niacinamide + Acid Serum combines 10% niacinamide with an acid complex for a brighter-looking complexion. Svr Laboratoire Dermatologique's SYR [B3] Essence is the gentlest of the four: 2% vitamin B3 with hyaluronic acids, in an essence that layers easily beneath creams.

Why Is Niacinamide So Easy to Pair?

Niacinamide is a good neighbour. It sits comfortably alongside hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and glycerin, alongside vitamin C, and alongside retinoids, where it is often chosen to keep a routine feeling comfortable. You may read an older worry that niacinamide and vitamin C should never meet; it comes from early laboratory conditions rather than from modern formulas, and many products now combine the two in one jar.

The simple rule is order, not avoidance. Apply the thinnest texture first and the richest last: toner or essence, then serum, then moisturiser, then sunscreen in the morning. If a niacinamide product and an exfoliating acid feel like too much together, use them at different times of day rather than giving one up.

Morning or Evening?

Either, and often both. Niacinamide does not make skin more sensitive to the sun, so it works as well under sunscreen as it does at night. Let the rest of the formula decide. Ziaja's Vitamin C & Niacinamide Day Cream is made for the morning, with shea butter and camellia seed oil for a soft satin finish before sunscreen. Olay's Regenerist Niacinamide Night Cream is the final step of an evening routine. Meisani's Niacinamide + Cucumber Hydrating Gel-Cream, with hyaluronic acid and ceramides, is light enough for morning and night. Byphasse's Niacinamide Anti-Dark Spots Cream sets niacinamide with avocado oil and hyaluronic acid for morning and evening use, with SPF by day.

What Does the Percentage on the Label Mean?

When a brand prints a number, such as 2%, 6%, 10% or 15%, it is telling you how much niacinamide the formula contains. It is a measure of concentration, not a measure of results. Moisturisers and essences tend to sit at the lower end; serums and toners that put niacinamide at the centre of the formula tend to sit higher.

Higher is not automatically better. A well-made formula at a modest percentage, used every day, is often more pleasant than a high one used now and then. Higher concentrations are also more likely to cause warmth, tingling or a little redness in some skins. Many formulas do not state a percentage at all; in that case, look at where niacinamide sits on the ingredients list.

Toners, Cleansers and Masks

Niacinamide is just as at home in the quieter steps. One Thing's Niacinamide 10% Toner keeps to five ingredients, applied after cleansing with your hands or a cotton pad, before serum and moisturiser. Cetaphil's Calming Niacinamide Cleansing Lotion is made for sensitive skin, removing makeup and impurities, then rinsed or wiped away with a soft cloth. Soleaf's Hydrating Apple & Niacinamide Face Mask is a sheet mask soaked in a serum of hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and apple extract, for a moment of care after cleansing.

Niacinamide in Shampoo

A short aside for the scalp. Niacinamide now appears in haircare too, where it is used for comfort and balance. Kérastase's Niacinamide & Glycerin Nourishing Shampoo is made for coarse, dry hair. L'Oréal Professionnel Paris's Scalp Advanced Niacinamide Anti-Inconfort Shampoo is designed to bring comfort to sensitive scalps. Collistar's Attivi Puri Hair Niacinamide Dry Shampoo refreshes the roots between washes.

Who Might Go Gently?

Niacinamide is among the better-tolerated actives, but every skin is its own. If your skin is sensitive or easily flushed, begin with a lower percentage, or with a moisturiser that contains niacinamide rather than a concentrated serum, and use it every other day for the first week or two. Patch test any new product on a small area first, such as the inside of the arm or along the jaw, and wait a day before using it on your whole face.

If a formula pairs niacinamide with an exfoliating acid, as L'Oréal Paris's Bright Reveal does, treat it as you would any acid: introduce it slowly and wear sunscreen by day. If your skin is under a doctor's care, or you are using a prescribed treatment, ask your pharmacist or doctor before adding a new active.

Where to Begin

If you would like one considered step, choose a single niacinamide serum at a moderate percentage, apply it after cleansing and before your usual moisturiser, morning or evening, and give it a few weeks of steady use before you judge it.
