Every perfume belongs to a fragrance family, a shorthand for its overall character. Four families cover most of what you will meet: floral, built on flowers; amber, once called oriental, warm with vanilla, resins and spice; woody, dry and grounded in vetiver, cedar, sandalwood or oud; and fresh, bright with citrus and herbs. Knowing which family you return to is the quickest way to choose a new perfume with confidence, and the scents you already love will usually tell you.
What Is a Fragrance Family?
Perfumers group compositions by the notes that lead them. A note is simply a smell within the perfume: bergamot, rose, vanilla, cedar. Most perfumes unfold in three stages. The top notes are what you smell in the first minutes; the heart follows and carries the character; the base is what stays on your skin longest. A family describes the overall impression rather than every note, so a floral can have a woody base and a fresh scent can finish warm. Many perfumes sit between two families, and that is where much of the interest lies.
If the words on a bottle puzzle you, Eau de Parfum, Eau de Toilette, Eau de Cologne: What the Difference Means explains concentration, which affects how long a perfume lasts but not which family it belongs to.
Floral
Floral is the largest family and the most varied. Some florals centre on a single flower, others on a bouquet. White flowers such as jasmine, tuberose and gardenia feel creamy and rich, while rose and peony feel softer and brighter. Choose a floral if you are drawn to the scent of a garden, a bunch of fresh flowers or a rose-scented soap.
Guerlain Jardins De Bagatelle is an eau de parfum built around neroli, rose and tuberose. Gucci Flora Gorgeous Gardenia pairs gardenia and jasmine with pear and a soft accent of brown sugar. Nina Ricci Premier Jour opens on mandarin, sets orchid and gardenia at its heart and settles on vanilla, amber and sandalwood. Acqua di Parma Peonia Nobile brings black pepper and raspberry to the top, peony and geranium to the heart, and amber and patchouli to the base.

Amber
Amber perfumes, long described as oriental, are the warmest of the four: vanilla, resins, sweet spice and soft woods, often around a floral heart. They feel enveloping and tend to stay close to the skin for hours. Choose amber if you love the smell of vanilla, warm spice or incense, or anything that feels like cashmere in scent form.
Tom Ford Black Orchid, a floral amber, layers jasmine, truffle and vanilla. Parfums Saphir Kisses by Saphir moves from pear, mandarin and cardamom to ylang-ylang, with a base of sandalwood and vanilla. Estée Lauder Youth-Dew is a spicy amber classic, its floral heart wrapped in warm spice over a woody base.
For the gentler end of this family, Choosing a Soft Oriental: Jil Sander Sensations and Its Family goes further.
Woody
Woody perfumes are drier and more structured. Vetiver is earthy and slightly smoky, cedar clean and pencil-like, sandalwood creamy, and oud deep and resinous. Many woody perfumes are unisex, and they are often brightened with citrus or pepper at the top. Choose woody if you like the smell of a walk through a forest, a cedar wardrobe or freshly sharpened pencils.
Roger & Gallet Vetyver is a light fragrant water, with citrus softened by sage at the top and vetiver essential oil beneath, made for easy everyday layering. Juliette Has A Gun Another Oud sets oud with bergamot, raspberry and ambroxan, and is composed to feel smooth rather than heavy. Moncler Le Bois Glacé is a vetiver-led eau de parfum with bergamot and pink pepper and a cool, mineral edge. Creed Royal Oud opens on bergamot, lemon and pink pepper, passes through galbanum, angelica and cedar, and rests on oud, sandalwood and musk.

Fresh and Citrus
Fresh perfumes lead with citrus, herbs and green notes: bergamot, lemon, orange, mandarin, mint, thyme and rosemary. They feel clean and lively, and many are colognes or eaux de toilette, lighter concentrations that suit warm days and the hours after a shower. Choose fresh if you reach for lemon in your tea, love the smell of cut herbs or want a scent that never feels heavy.
4711 Echt Kölnisch Wasser Original is a classic cologne of bergamot, lemon and orange over rosemary and lavender. Hermès Eau D'Orange Verte centres on fresh orange, with mint at the top and oakmoss and patchouli beneath. Azur de Puig, an eau de toilette, opens on bergamot, mandarin and thyme, with jasmine and lily of the valley at its heart and patchouli, oakmoss and amber to finish. Aire Sevilla Aqua Fresca de Azahar sets clementine, mandarin and bergamot over orange blossom, lily of the valley and jasmine, with a soft amber and musk finish.

Orange blossom and neroli sit on the line between fresh and floral; Neroli: What It Is, What It Smells Like, and What It Does in a Fragrance explains why.
How to Find Your Family
Start with what you already love. Look at the perfume you wear most, or one you have loved in the past, and read its notes. The family that appears most often across them is likely your own. Then think beyond perfume:
- Fresh flowers, rose soap or a garden in bloom: floral.
- Vanilla, warm spice, incense or soft cashmere: amber.
- Forest walks, cedar, pencil shavings or smoky tea: woody.
- Lemon, orange peel, mint or cut herbs: fresh and citrus.
When you test a new perfume, spray it on your skin rather than paper and wait. The top notes fade within minutes, and what remains after an hour is the truest picture of its family. Try no more than two or three at a time, one on each wrist, so that you can tell them apart.
If you love one family, look next at its neighbours: a floral lover often enjoys a floral amber, and a fresh lover a citrus with a woody base. Our suggestion: find the family your favourite scent belongs to, and begin with the selection above that holds it.
